Salis is an ancient Swiss noble family from Soglio in Bergell in southern Grisons.

The first reliably documented member of the noble family in Soglio is Rodolfus de Salice de Solio, who was mentioned in documents in the years 1285-1293 and died in the spring of 1300. He was probably a descendant of the patrician Salici family of Como, documented as early as 1202. As ministers and vassals, also with the shield and knighthood of the bishops of Chur, the Salis were able to expand considerably in Bregaglia and also in neighbouring Valtellina. Two main lines developed, the John line and the Gubert line, which gained influence in numerous European countries.
The first offices in the valley communities of Graubünden, that of Podestà of Bergell, and later the office of governor of Valtellina and also the position of president within the 'Three Leagues', were very often occupied by members of the Gubertus line in particular. The castles of Castelmur, Neu-Süns, Rietberg, Campell, Wynegg, Elgg, Sulzberg and in Frankish Wiesentfels or Lobenstein were sometimes owned by the family or pawned.
