The rooster, Christian symbol of vigilance, has long been Gallicized in national culture because of the similarity between the Latin terms 'Gallus' (rooster) and 'Gallicus' (Gaul). Moreover, its fighting spirit and fearlessness symbolize French virtues. Nevertheless, the French cock remained an unofficial national symbol. Possibly here it symbolizes military valor and/or recalls a battle.
